Refurbishment of an industrial monument with diverse living environments Rooftop garden as the centrepiece of a new multigenerational house
The listed industrial building, constructed in 1910, has been continuously extended and modified throughout its history. Over time, its use transitioned from industrial production to administrative functions and later to office spaces. Now, the finely structured brick building is set to be repurposed for residential use.
The proposed project envisions replacing the low-quality additions from the past 50 years with a delicate timber structure that seeks a more harmonious relationship with the original building. The hierarchy of the individual sections is emphasised by adding structures of differing heights. The building’s wings will be connected by a spacious rooftop garden that combines private outdoor areas with shared communal spaces.
Planned as a multigenerational house, the project aims to bring together different living environments under one roof through a wide variety of residential typologies. Throughout the transformation, great emphasis is placed on preserving the building’s industrial character.
